USMNT Prospects That Need A Transfer

Eyebrow graphic
December 2024
The January transfer window is on the horizon. What young USMNT prospects need a new challenge? What USMNT prospects need a fresh start? For players in MLS, the January window can be tricky because it’s the window where their MLS clubs are willing to make more significant moves, but clubs in Europe do not spend as much as they do in the summer.

AM, Diego Luna, Real Salt Lake (2003)

Luna needs a move to get the attention of Mauricio Pochettino. It’s clear that Pochettino isn’t placing a high value on his performances in MLS. He currently sits behind Christian Pulisic, Brenden Aaronson, Malik Tillman and likely Gio Reyna at the attacking-midfield position. Luna needs a move to a more challenging league to get on the USMNT radar. His stock is at an all time high, so the time for Luna and Real Salt Lake is now. It’s been rumored that Leeds United in the English Championship is interested in Luna.

CM, Jack McGlynn, Philadelphia Union (2003)

McGlynn is in a similar boat as Luna, facing an uphill battle to crack the USMNT roster before the World Cup. He sits behind Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Luca de la Torre, Gianluca Busio, Aidan Morris and perhaps others. Similar to Luna, McGlynn’s stock is high and Philadelphia are in the middle of a head coaching change, so the time to move is now. PSV has been the most consistently reported destination for McGlynn.

CB, Jalen Neal, LA Galaxy (2003)

Neal lost his starting job to newly acquired Carlos Garcés midway through the season. Neal’s need for a move is largely based on the Galaxy’s center-back plans next season. They could sell Garcés, who looks like a player that European clubs would be interested in. They could also go young and pair Neal with Garcés. If neither situation manifests, Neal would likely have suitors in MLS and there might be European clubs who are willing to bet on his talent. Neal would need a big comeback year to get into the USMNT roster mix ahead of the World Cup.

LB, Jonathan Gómez, PAOK Thessaloniki (2003)

Gómez has played a total of 350 minutes in all competitions since he moved to PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece. There were a lot of criticisms around this move because Greece is oftentimes a black hole for players, especially the top of the table clubs because they sign so many players. The criticism has been justified. He could stay and fight for a spot, but it might make more sense to cut his losses and hit the restart button. The question is whether he has many suitors. It might be that LigaMX or MLS are his best options at this point.

CM, Alejandro Alvarado, Vizela (2003)

Alvarado looked like an exciting box to box prospect during the 2022 U-20 World Cup Qualifiers, but his stock has seen a study decline since that point. He has not been able to break through Vizela’s first team and has been stuck on their reserve team for three years. He should have moved over a year ago, but here we are. His options are also likely very limited. There is probably an MLS team willing to take a chance on him based on what he has shown for the USYNT.

CM, Rokas Pukstas, Hajduk Split (2004)

A year ago, it looked like Pukstas might be on a path to compete for a USMNT roster spot. Hadjuk Split made a big mistake in not transferring Pukstas during one of the last two windows while his stock was high. They likely overvalued him and now his stock has taken a dip. He is still young (20) and talented, so while Split may not get what they wanted for him, there is likely still a solid market for him.

RB, Alex Freeman, Orlando City (2004)

Freeman can’t possibly play another season in MLS Next Pro, can he? If he does, both Orlando City’s front office and Freeman’s agent should continue to receive ridicule. Freeman is too talented to not be getting first team minutes somewhere. A smart club will see the potential and buy low. Orlando should cut the kid loose if they don’t have a plan for him.

RB, Leo Duru, Blackburn Rovers (2005)

Duru has outpaced U21 football in England, but Blackburn are in a promotion race and are likely not interested in playing an inexperienced player unless they have to. In the meantime, it would be nice to see Duru get a loan to a League One club or equivalent level.

WING, Bryce Jamison, Orange County (2006)

Jamison had a really strong end to the season last year and finally looked like he was ready for a new challenge. There has been reported interest in USL and I am sure there is interest in Europe as well. I have heard that Orange County’s valuation of him is high which may need to be adjusted before he is moved.

DM, Matthew Corcoran, Birmingham Legion (2006)

Corcoran was all but certain to move this summer before an injury derailed the majority of his season and his transfer prospects. Would another half of a season in USL hurt or help his stock? It’s tough to say. If Corcoran can find an upgrade in level where he can get a chance to play, both he and Birmingham should jump on it.
