2009 Top 20
December 2024
The 2009 class has the most potential of any class I have graded. They have the top overall prospect and three of the top six overall prospects, even more impressive given that they are only in their U16 season. This class boasts elite talent and depth and we haven’t even uncovered all of the dual-nationals playing abroad that typically emerge over time. This group of players will be incredibly exciting to monitor and hopefully we one day look back on this class as an inflection point in the USMNT program. However, there is still a long way to go and a lot can change before these boys are ready to contribute to the senior team.
2009 Class at a Glance
4.60
Top 20 Average Rating
WING, AM, LB
Positional Strengths
CM, DM
Positional Weaknesses
1. CM/RW/AM, Cavan Sullivan, Philadelphia Union (No change)
Rating: 5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇩🇪
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-17
Sullivan is special because of his unique blend of athleticism, strength, technical ability, creativity, instincts and elite mentality. He has the playmaking ability to be a ten, the engine and defensive desire to play in a box to box role and the one on one and scoring instincts to play as a winger. Sullivan is a risk taker on the pitch and sometimes that leads to a high volume of turnovers, but you accept the turnovers because he will eventually make magic.
2. WING, Mathis Albert, Borussia Dortmund (↑1)
Rating: 5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇩🇪 🇫🇷
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-17
Albert can do anything you would want a modern day winger to do. He has the physicality, technical ability and creativity to beat defenders one on one, he can create chances for himself and for others, he can play off of the ball and he does the work defensively. The one area I would like to see him continue to develop the number of ways he wins in one on one battles. This isn’t an area of weakness, but I think he can add more weapons to his arsenal.
3. CM/AM, KK Spivey, San Jose Earthquakes (↓1)
Rating: 5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Spivey has as much raw talent as anyone in this class or the entire United States youth pool for that matter, but he doesn’t dominate games as often as he should. Spivey is a complete handful in midfield because of his size and athletic ability, technical ability and ball winning ability against the ball. He has a box to box profile, but has enough final third instincts and playmaking ability to play higher up the pitch. Even when he isn’t getting on the ball as much as you would like, he can still impact the game defensively.
4. DM, Adri Mehmeti, New York Red Bulls (No change)
Rating: 5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇦🇱
Youth National Team: No appearances this cycle
Mehmeti is the rare game changer on both sides of the ball from the holding midfield position. He has as good of passing range and technique as anyone you will see at his age and when he is locked in defensively, he can be a possession wrecker.
5. LB, Prince Forfor, Columbus Crew (↑1)
Rating: 5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Forfor’s transition from being an attacker to a wing-back has been a seamless one. He has taken to the defensive side of this transition incredibly well and is already a very good one on one defender. He has an Alphonso Davies level physical and technical profile combination, no joke, but whether he comes anywhere close to Davies’ level is of course a big question. Right now, Forfor relies on his blazing pace to win and while he has soft feet, he needs to improve under pressure and add more deception to his game.
6. WING/LB, Manu Romero, Real Madrid (↓1)
Rating: 5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇺🇾 🇪🇸
Youth National Team: No appearances this cycle
Romero is a dynamic wide player with a lethal left-foot. Romero has the final third instincts to stick at winger along with the creativity and quickness to be effective one on one. He is incredibly crafty and clever on the ball, under pressure. His defensive abilities and instincts are not as far along as his offensive profile, but if he does need to permanently move back to left-back, he should not be considered a huge liability.
7. CB, Tyson Espy, LAFC (↑13)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Espy has a unique blend of size, pace, mobility, comfortability on the ball and defensive instincts. If he grows another inch or two and continues to add passing range, we are looking at a top level center-back prospect. Espy is very good at breaking pressure with the ball and taking his space intelligently.
8. GK, Marcelo Avalos, Philadelphia Union (↓1)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇲🇽 🇮🇸
Youth National Team: 🇲🇽 U-16
Avalos has that special ability to face very little action for the majority of the game, but stay focused and come up with a massive save that helps his team secure points. Avalos has all the tools to be a great shot stopper: positioning, reflexes, explosiveness, coordination and flexibility. He has the technique to be a very good distributor and showcases that ability with both feet, but at times he can make errors because of a lack of focus or decision making. The main area of his game that needs to improve is his handling. At times he can parry a ball in the wrong spot or spill a ball into a dangerous position.
9. WING, Omar Hassan, Seattle Sounders (↓1)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇸🇴
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Hassan makes lives miserable for his opponents both with and against the ball. He uses his pace and direct style of play to consistently apply pressure to a backline and he has a relentless disposition and motor that make him a complete nuisance in pressing and recovery situations. He needs to improve his close control and add some nuance to how he attacks. I would also like to see him improve his passing technique.
Zidane Cadet, striker for Inter Miami
10. CF, Zidane Cadet, Inter Miami (No change)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇭🇹
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Cadet is a striker that does a lot of things well and has incredible feet. He is a very reliable hold up target and can make a lot of impact when connecting with teammates and driving at defenders. He does a good job of protecting the ball under pressure while using creativity and technical skills to weave out of pressure and find a dangerous action. His final third movement is also quite good. He isn’t likely to end up being the biggest striker, so I’d like to see him develop his vertical game a bit more.
11. WING, Kashan Hines, Sporting Kansas City (↑5)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇯🇲
Youth National Team: No appearances this cycle
Hines might be the most underappreciated player in this class given his physical profile and skillset. He has good size, speed and agility and he pairs that with good feet, technical skills and feel for taking players on one on one. He can also finish well with both feet. He is willing to do the work against the ball as well and his profile helps him cause problems for the opponent. For Hines, it is about consistency and learning how to impact each game that he plays in.
12. CF, Malik Jakupovic, Philadelphia Union (↑3)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇧🇦
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Jakupovic is a tall, rangy, left-footed striker with a fantastic goal scoring pedigree. His movement off of the ball is fantastic and his length and pace are incredibly challenging for defenders to deal with. When he consistently brings it, he is unstoppable.
13. RB, Alexito Gomez, New York Red Bulls (↓1)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇨🇴
Youth National Team: No appearances this cycle
Gomez is a good two-way full-back that has the ability to lock down attackers and push forward offensively. While his decision making and deception on the ball have room for improvement, he has a good technical foundation and he has become more ambitious going forward.
14. RB/LB, Linkon Ream, Real Salt Lake (↓1)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸
Youth National Team: No appearances this cycle
Ream is a well rounded full-back that does many things very well. He has the ability to play on both the left and right side, and while his dominant foot is his right foot, he plays mostly on the left and uses his left foot effectively. Ream isn’t a big kid, but he has the strength, balance and quickness of a capable defender. He isn’t asked to get forward too often, but absolutely has the skills to contribute in attack.
15. WING, Makai Wells, Barca Residency (↓1)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸
Youth National Team: No appearances this cycle
Wells is one of the cleanest and most technical wingers in the youth pipeline. He has advanced footwork, great touch and close control. He is very tricky and confident when attacking players one on one. If he continues to develop his game off of the ball, he will find himself impacting the game in different ways and adding more goals to his game.
16. GK, Tobias Szewcyk, New York Red Bulls (↓1)
Rating: 4.5 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇵🇱
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Szewcyk is a very good shot stopping keeper with decent size, explosiveness, coordination, flexibility, reflexes and hand strength. He is also highly capable on the ball, with the ability to accurately place balls with both feet with good range.
17. WING/CM, Judah Siqueira, New England Revolution (New addition)
Rating: 4 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇧🇷
Youth National Team: No appearances this cycle
Siqueira is an overall high quality soccer player. I think you could put him at most positions and he would succeed. He plays primarily as a winger because New England does not have a ton of talent in attack at his age group, but I think he does his best work in between the lines and I think he ends up as an eight long term. He is an above average athlete, has good feet, passing range and a great feel for the game. He also happily does the defensive work. He reminds me a lot of Weston McKennie.
18. WING, Darris Hyte, Chicago Fire (New addition)
Rating: 4 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Hyte is a smooth operating winger that can make plays for himself and others from either wing. He also does the dirty work against the ball and can be highly disruptive in a pressing system. He plays with good tempo, instincts and vision and has a good feel for making plays in the final third. If his physical profile continues to develop, he could have a very bright future.
19. WING, Jakob Garcia, Orlando City (↓5)
Rating: 4 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇨🇴
Youth National Team: 🇺🇸 U-16
Garcia is a two-footed winger that can play on either side and deliver and strike the ball incredibly well with both feet. He is a tricky dribbler that likes to attack one on one. He isn’t the biggest guy, but has the quickness and agility to get around defenders. He has room to grow against the ball and off of the ball.
20. AM, Ademar Chavez, FC Cincinnati (New addition)
Rating: 4 ✮
Nationalities: 🇺🇸 🇲🇽
Youth National Team: 🇲🇽 U-16
It’s very rare for me to rank attacking mids at this age very high, typically because I am skeptical of their physical projections. Chavez is a little different, he has pretty good size and athleticism, but also has the technical and tactical abilities of a ten.
