Noahkai Banks Scouting Report

Eyebrow graphic
January 2025
Noahkai Banks made his Bundesliga debut at just over 18 years old, becoming the youngest defender to play in the Bundesliga this season and only the ninth U19 center-back to achieve first-team minutes in league play within a top-five European league.

Banks ranks fourth among my overall USMNT prospects and is the second-highest-rated player from the 2006 birth year. His debut holds significant importance because the current USMNT center-back pool lacks players with exceptionally high ceilings. Moreover, no other center-back in the U.S. youth system possesses greater potential than Banks. He is arguably one of the highest-ceiling center-backs the United States program has ever produced.

Physical profile

Physically, Banks possesses all the attributes desired in a modern-day center-back. While he currently lacks significant body mass, he just turned 18, so his body is far from being matured completely. The key for him is to add functional muscle mass that does not compromise his speed, lateral quickness, and agility.

Standing at approximately 6-4 (1.93 meters), Banks demonstrates impressive agility for his size, allowing him to play effectively in open spaces. He possesses exceptional lateral quickness and nimble feet, enabling him to excel in one-on-one situations. Furthermore, he boasts impressive pace to recover defensively and exhibits exceptional vertical explosiveness, making him a potentially dominant aerial presence.

If one were to design the ideal center-back profile from scratch, the result would closely resemble Banks' physical profile.

Technical profile

On the ball

Banks possesses a remarkable range of skills on the ball. He displays the touch, footwork, and close control typically associated with an effective box-to-box midfielder. These attributes enable him to navigate pressure effectively and consistently drive the ball into the middle third of the field.

He is equally proficient as a passer, demonstrating accuracy and comfort with both feet, a skillset that contributes to his frequent deployment as a left center-back. His most lethal pass is a line-splitting, driven ground ball, which he can execute with pace and precision using either foot. He also possesses the ability to bend ground balls around midfielders to find overlapping full-backs or wingers. Furthermore, he is comfortable launching long balls to target strikers. In the past year or two, he has significantly improved the range and accuracy of his diagonal passes, enabling him to tilt the field with greater consistency.

Banks' passing game is not solely reliant on power. He can also execute delicate touch passes that require finesse and creativity, allowing him to gracefully escape pressure.

The only pass I have yet to observe him consistently execute is a through ball over the top. I have no doubt that he possesses the necessary skills to attempt this pass, but he may not consistently identify these opportunities, lack the confidence to try them, or be operating within a system that does not encourage such passes. Regardless, this represents the final element in his passing arsenal that I believe he can further develop.

Against the ball

Defensively, Banks exhibits impressive footwork in one-on-one situations, demonstrating quick shuffling and maintaining proper foot spacing to facilitate rapid changes in direction.

For a player of his stature, he exhibits remarkable ground coverage, displaying agility and sound tackling technique. His ability to smoothly transition to the ground and time his tackles effectively is uncommon among players of his height.

In aerial duels, he excels at anticipating positioning and maneuvering his body to gain a leverage advantage. He generally times his headers well and makes clean contact, although there's room for further refinement in this aspect.

Tactical profile

On the ball

Soccer is fundamentally about creating numerical advantages, and Banks possesses the rare ability to orchestrate this from the backline. He demonstrates a unique understanding of how to exploit an opponent's momentum, subtly advancing into midfield and drawing the attention of the second line of defense. This allows him to release the ball to a teammate, creating advantageous situations in transition. This is a particularly potent weapon against teams employing a high-pressing strategy.

He can also effectively break lines through his passing. He identifies vulnerabilities in the opposition's defensive structure and quickly delivers passes to teammates occupying pockets of space, enabling his team to gain numerical superiority.

Banks displays exceptional intelligence and instinct in his passing. He utilizes his eyes and body movement to deceive opponents, disguising his intended target and employing unexpected timing. This minimizes the likelihood of his passes being intercepted in tight spaces. Such a level of sophistication is typically observed in seasoned veterans, not an 18-year-old.

However, Banks is not without his weaknesses. His most significant shortcoming is a tendency towards inconsistency, both in possession and out of possession. As a risk-taker with supreme confidence in his abilities, he occasionally forces passes or holds onto the ball for too long, leading to turnovers in dangerous areas. This is likely the primary concern for his manager, limiting his playing time.

Encouragingly, his debut showcased a positive development: he began cautiously and gradually increased his risk-taking and progressive actions as the game unfolded and his confidence grew. I strongly believe in nurturing a player's bravery at a young age, as it's far easier to coach caution than to instill genuine courage. I am confident that over time, Banks will significantly reduce these unforced errors. Once he achieves this level of consistency, he will undoubtedly become a dominant force."

Against the ball

Banks generally positions himself effectively, occupying the correct width and depth to intercept passes while simultaneously deterring opponents from attempting passes into his zone. He rarely finds himself out of position, whether maintaining the defensive structure, executing rapid positional shifts, or recovering from attacks.

He consistently demonstrates alertness and awareness of his surroundings, rarely being caught ball-watching or appearing static. He effectively identifies and tracks runners within his defensive zone. While I wouldn't characterize his anticipation as elite, he possesses the instincts to position himself optimally and intercept passes with sufficient consistency to disrupt opposing attacks.

Mentality

One of the most striking aspects of Banks' game is his supreme confidence. He possesses the courage to break lines and play proactively, even under intense pressure. This is a highly valuable trait, particularly challenging to cultivate, and it is rare among young center-backs.

While not physically imposing, Banks is far from soft. He willingly embraces the physical demands of the position, although overpowering opponents with his physicality is not his primary strength. Occasionally, when the intensity of the game dips, I've observed a slight decline in his effort level. However, he consistently rises to the occasion when facing top-tier competition.

Similar to his effort level, his focus can sometimes waver. He occasionally misplaces passes that he should execute effortlessly or displays heavy touches despite possessing excellent ball control. These instances often suggest a momentary lapse in concentration, a common occurrence among young players. I anticipate that these lapses will diminish over time, and I am not overly concerned about their long-term impact."

Conclusion

Banks is precisely the type of player the U.S. Men's National Team needs, and his emergence cannot come soon enough. He possesses the physical profile to excel in any defensive system and the on-ball skills to punish pressing teams. It's truly remarkable that Germany hasn't yet integrated him into their setup. Perhaps they have attempted to recruit him, but Banks may have declined in favor of representing the United States.

Although he is provisionally cap-tied after participating in the U17 World Cup for the U.S., the USSF likely aims to secure his full commitment to avoid any potential late attempts by Germany. A string of strong performances in the Bundesliga should earn him a call-up from head coach Mauricio Pochettino, and a full season as a Bundesliga starter in 2025-2026 could propel him into the starting lineup ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The next 18 months promise to be incredibly exciting for young Noahkai Banks.
