U16 v. Netherlands Match Report

Eyebrow graphic
June 2023
It was a mess of a game that ended 3-0 in favor of Netherlands. The boys never looked focused, connected and up for the physical battle, especially in the first half. It was a forgettable game that Nsien and the team needs to quickly learn from, forget about and move on. I know these are good players that simply had a bad game.

Match Summary

Lineup

This was the first time I have seen a U.S. Youth National Team deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation in a long time. It looked something like:

GK, Zack Campagnolo, Orlando City
LB, Jeremiah White, Philadelphia Union
LCB, Nicholas de Almeida, Inter Miami
RCB, Neil Pierre, Philadelphia Union (captain)
RB, Joshua Santiago, LAFC
CM, Ervin Torres Jr, Austin FC
CM, Adyn Torres, Atlanta United
AM, Axel Perez, Lyon
LW, Maximo Carrizo, NYCFC
RW, Bryce Outman, FC Dallas
CF, Sam Petrie, Barca AZ

Solutions

The manager, Michael Nsien, made five(!) subs at half and one more later in the half, including:

LB, Christian McFarlane, NYCFC for Jeremiah White
CM, Stiven Jimenez, FC Cincinnati for Ervin Torres
LW, Nimfasha Berchimas, Charlotte FC for Maximo Carrizo
CF, Noah Santos, Portland Timbers for Sam Petrie
RW, Jonny Shore, NYCFC for Bryce Outman
AM, Santi Morales, Inter Miami for Axel Perez
RB, Drew Baiera, NYCFC for Joshua Santiago

Run of play

Other than a five to ten minute stretch in the first half, it was dominated by Netherlands. The United States struggled mightily to break the Netherlands press and showed very little understanding and cohesion for how they should break the press. Passes were forced, inaccurate and mistakes were countless. It felt like the team was in scramble mode for 70% of the first half. Thanks to some outstanding goal keeping by Campagnolo, the U.S. only went into the half down 2-0. There were not much in the way of bright spots aside from a few nice moments from Axel Perez.

Nsien made five subs at half and it definitely sparked a change in tone. The team looked a little more cohesive in connecting passes and a little more physical. Berchimas was immediately dangerous off of the left wing and the front four of Berchimas, Perez, Santos and Shore looked more threatening. Berchimas missed two very good chances in the second half, setup Shore for a decent chance and Perez and Pierre both went off of the post. Berchimas' first chance came in the first minutes of the second half thanks to a great counter pressing moment by Adyn Torres. If that chance had been converted, the game could have gotten more interesting. Instead, the U.S. ran out of gas around the 70th minute and the game got ugly with little help from the referees. Netherlands sealed it late with a third and the game was over at that point.

Top performers

GK, Zack Campagnolo

Campagnolo was the only reason the U.S. was in the game as long as they were. He made a handful of point blank saves, showing great positioning and reflexes both with his hands and feet.

AM, Axel Perez

Aside from a few misplaced passes Perez was one of the few dangerous players on the game. He had a near post strike that forced a save and a beautiful shot off of the post.

WING, Nimfasha Berchimas

Berchimas was electric off of the bench and applied a lot of pressure off of the left wing. He had two big chances in the second half.

CB, Nicholas de Almeida

Most of the time was a disaster building out of the back, but Almeida was the one player that showed poise and accuracy with the ball.

CM, Adyn Torres

Torres had some turnovers in bad spots, but he was put in a lot of bad spots as the deep lying playmaker. What I was impressed with was his defensive activity and his ball winning. He created one of the biggest chances in the game after a great counter-press moment.

WING, Jonny Shore

Shore got into some really dangerous spots, he just couldn't convert or get his shot off before defenders flew in and deflected them
