U18 USYNT March Roster Analysis

Eyebrow graphic
March 2024
The United States U-18 team is reassembling for the first time since September 2024. As the most inactive age group in the USYNT system, it's encouraging to see the 2007 class get a camp. This group will step into the spotlight when they become the core of the next U-20 World Cup cycle.

For this camp, the team will be led by former Philadelphia Union II coach Marlon LeBlanc, known for his ability to develop young talent. While this opportunity serves as more of a coaching trial, it's exciting to see him in the mix.

The U-18s are headed to Marbella, Spain, where they'll face Morocco on March 22 and Norway on March 25. The Marbella site typically livestreams matches on its YouTube channel, so fans may have a chance to watch the action unfold.

Roster analysis

Goalkeepers

Zack Campagnolo (Colorado Rapids), Patrick Los (Chicago Fire)

Campagnolo has been the top choice for this age group since they first began assembling three and a half years ago, with Los also earning consistent call-ups. This isn't the strongest goalkeeper class, and the options remain fairly limited.

Who isn't here?

Giorgio De Marzi (Roma),  Kayne Rizvanovich (FC United)

I'm curious why De Marzi has yet to receive a USYNT call-up. He’s highly rated at Roma and, from what I’ve seen, the top eligible goalkeeper in this class. Since he hasn’t been selected for Italy’s youth national team, there’s no competition there—at least for now. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he’s fully eligible for the U.S., which suggests one of three possibilities: he’s either waiting for an Italy call-up, hasn’t been released, or simply hasn’t been invited.

Meanwhile, Rizvanovich was part of the last camp in September, but since then, he has left FC Cincinnati. His rights now belong to Minnesota United, though the club has yet to finalize a path for integrating him into the organization.

Full-Backs

RB, Drew Baiera (NYCFC), RB, Harbor Miller (LA Galaxy), LB, Dominik Chong Qui (Atlanta United)

This is one area where the selection staff nailed it. Baiera is among the top players in this class, while Miller has had a strong start with LA Galaxy and is one of the few 2007-born players consistently seeing first-team minutes. Meanwhile, Chong-Qui, a high-upside talent, appears to have taken another step forward this year.

Who isn't here?

RB, Damario McIntosh (New England Revolution), LB, Peyton Miller (New England Revolution) ⛑️ , LB, Tristan Brown (Columbus Crew)

McIntosh is one of the top players in this class who has yet to receive a U.S. camp invite. With Baiera and Miller ahead of him, competition is tough, but he deserves a look at some point.

Peyton Miller is arguably the top prospect in the 2007 class, but he's currently sidelined with an injury and is more likely to be in the mix for a U-20 World Cup spot this year.

Brown, the lone left-back in the last camp, has been replaced by Chong-Qui for this one.

Center-Backs

Neil Pierre (Philadelphia Union), Jose Magana Jr (LA Galaxy), Kaiden Moore (Atlanta United)

Pierre is the top center-back from this class and one of the top overall players. He is a no-brainer selection to this team. Magana has been a consistent selection and is a solid performer for this age group. Moore is the top left-footed center-back options and has been in and out of this group.

Who isn't here?

Chibuike Ukaegbu (Sacramento Republic), Nicholas Almeida (Inter Miami)

Ukaegbu is well regarded within U.S. Soccer and was invited to the last U-20 camp as part of a deeper exploratory look into the U-20 pool. His absence here suggests he was either not released or not fit. He made Sacramento’s first matchday squad but didn’t play, and with the club having a game during this camp, it’s likely he wasn’t released.

Almeida was part of the last camp, but this time, Moore takes his spot. While Almeida is a skilled player, he hasn't quite developed enough physically to reach the threshold for a professional-level center-back.

Center/Defensive-Mids

DM, Colin Guske (Orlando City), DM/CM, Darius Lane (Brighton), DM/CM, Ervin Torres (Austin FC), DM/RB, Tyson Pearce (St. Louis City), CM, Synder Brunell (Seattle Sounders)

Guske and Lane were both part of the last camp and have gained experience with the U-19 and U-20 squads. Meanwhile, Torres, Pearce, and Brunell all have USYNT experience and are regulars in MLS Next Pro.

Who isn't here?

DM, Evrit Fisher (Kustosija), DM/CM, Adyn Torres (Atlanta United), DM/CM, Franz Bleicher (FC Augsburg), DM/CM, Ben Nagel (FC Twente), CM, Jonny Shore (NYCFC), CM, Nate Worth (Tampa Bay Rowdies), CM, Jacob Arroyave (NYCFC) ⛑️

I wouldn’t say any of these players are true snubs, but I do have concerns about the lack of pace and physicality in the selected group. Fisher is playing in Croatia for a club known for developing and selling young talent. Torres is the one player who could have added more ground coverage to the midfield. Meanwhile, Bleicher has been in and out of the German youth national team setup, and Nagel recently received a call-up to the Dutch U-18 squad.

Shore, a core player for this age group and a regular call-up, is likely absent because he's starting for NYCFC and was not released. Worth, in my opinion, would have been an upgrade for this group, but it appears he wasn’t invited to this camp. Meanwhile, Arroyave is still recovering from a long-term leg injury.

Attacking-Mids/Wingers

AM, Axel Perez (Lyon), AM, Santiago Morales (Inter Miami), AM/W, Jaidyn Contreras (FC Dallas), W, Aiden Hezarkhani (RSL), W, Daniel Pinter (Inter Miami)

Perez and Morales will play as the No. 10s and will be relied upon to create chances for this group. Contreras will likely feature on the wing alongside Hezarkhani and Pinter. My main concern is this group’s ability to win one-on-one battles—Hezarkhani is the only player here with the skill set to do so somewhat consistently.

Who isn't here?

AM, Marvin Dills (Eintracht Frankfurt), AM, Owen Anderson (Real Salt Lake), AM, Leo Orejarena (FC Dallas), AM, Santiago Pita (Atlanta United), AM/W, Zane Okoro (Lincoln City), W, Gavin Turner (DC United), W, Darius Randell (Minnesota United), W/CF, Zavier Gozo (Real Salt Lake)

It appears that the United States has waited too long on Dills—he is now with Germany's U-18s, and I believe he offers a better attacking-mid option than the players we've brought in.

Anderson is another player who could have added dynamism to the midfield, which is something this group currently lacks. Orejarena and Pita were both part of the last camp but weren't selected for this one.

Okoro is a significant miss—he’s never been invited to a USYNT camp, which I consider a mistake. He’s been trialing successfully with EPL side Bournemouth, and I think he could provide a major boost in playmaking and final-third quality for this team.

Turner is another big omission. Unless he's not fit, it’s hard to understand why he hasn’t been included in the USYNT setup. He’s by far the best wide-attacking player in this age group.

Randell, who would bring one-on-one ability and pace, is another player I would consider, though I’m not 100% sure of his U.S. eligibility. Gozo is currently playing up with the U-20s during this window.

Center-Forwards

Justin Ellis (Orlando City), Dino Klapija (RB Leipzig)

Ellis and Klapija have similar number nine profiles. Both prefer the ball played to their feet and are capable of making plays for themselves and others in the final third. Ellis has had a strong start in MLS Next Pro, recording a goal and an assist in his first two games. He could be auditioning for a promotion to the U-20 team, which currently lacks true number nine options.

Klapija didn’t impress me in the match I saw this year. I rated him highly when he was at NYCFC, but I’m unsure how much he has developed since moving to Europe.

Who isn't here?

Jykese Fields (Hoffenheim) ⛑️, Caden Glover (St. Louis City), Stefan Chirila (FC Cincinnati), Tomo Allen (San Jose Earthquakes)

I believe Fields is injured, as he has not featured for Hoffenheim yet this spring season. Glover has recently been in camps with the U-19s and U-20s but doesn’t appear to have been selected this time around. Chirila is with Romania's U-18 team. Allen has yet to receive a call-up to a USYNT camp, and his lack of playing time in MLS Next Pro isn’t helping his case.

Biggest misses

GK, Giorgio De Marzi (Roma), CB, Chibuike Ukaegbu (Sacramento Republic), CM, Nate Worth (Tampa Bay Rowdies), AM, Marvin Dills (Eintracht Frankfurt), AM, Owen Anderson (Real Salt Lake), AM/W, Zane Okoro (Lincoln City), W, Gavin Turner (DC United), W, Darius Randell (Minnesota United)

I don’t have all the details on why these players are absent, but there are several who could have made this team more dynamic and dangerous. De Marzi, Dills, Okoro, and Turner are the players I would have most liked to see in this camp.

Player receiving first camp

None

Given how infrequently this age group gets together and their relative youth, it's disappointing not to see any players earning their first camp. There aren't enough top performers on this team to justify the lack of experimentation within the pool.

Roster construction & grade

This roster is strong along the backline, but outside of that, I see several weaknesses and gaps. Aside from Lane, the group lacks players who can control the game and dominate box-to-box. There's also a lack of one-on-one attacking ability from wide areas. The full-backs will likely need to provide much of the attacking dynamism. The center-forwards are skilled with the ball at their feet, but neither are particularly vertical players. I’m concerned there will be congestion in the middle of the pitch, with too many players wanting to hold onto the ball and make plays, but not enough movement off the ball to create space.

Grade: C

This age group has talent, but they've lost a few top players to other countries, are dealing with some injuries, and have a few players who have outgrown this level. The main issue I see is in the central and wide attacking selections. This team will need to rely on a solid defense to limit chances in order to succeed. I think they’ll struggle to create a significant number of quality scoring opportunities.
