The United States under-19 team has been selected by head coach Michael Nsien for a team in West Palm Beach, Florida. This is a domestic camp that will likely include friendlies against local clubs. These players are competing to get promoted to the U-20 team ahead of the 2025 U-20 World Cup.
The roster
In my roster analysis articles, I always identify the top players that were not selected. This article will not include that list in this roster until I see the U-20 roster when I will have the full picture of how the 2006 and 2007 selections were made.
Goalkeepers
Andrew Rick (Philadelphia Union), Zackory Campagnolo (Colorado Rapids)
Rick returns from the last U-19 camp and Campagnolo joins instead of Duran Ferree. Rick has the better chance to work his way up to the U-20 team before the U-20 World Cup.
Who isn't here?
Duran Ferree (FC Nordsjaelland)
Ferree was in the last camp and Campagnolo takes his place for this camp.
Full-backs
RB, Andrew Baiera (NYCFC), RB, Harbor Miller (LA Galaxy), RB/LB, Owen Presthus (Columbus Crew), RB/LB, Oscar Verhoeven (San Jose Earthquakes)All four full-backs are naturally right-footed, but Presthus and Verhoeven have a lot of experience playing on the left. Verhoeven was on the U-20 roster last month and got moved to the U-19 roster this month. We will see who he gets replaced by on that team. Baiera and Miller are both 2007 born players and are back from last camp.
Presthus is the only player on this roster that is getting his first ever USYNT team camp and it’s very well deserved. I ranked Presthus as the most
impactful U-18 player in MLS Next Pro this season. He is fantastic with both feet and can comfortably play as a left-back.
Who isn't here?
LB, Tahir Reid-Brown (Orlando City), LB, Luca Bombino (LAFC), LB Dominik Chong-Qui (Atlanta United)
Reid-Brown is dropped after getting an opportunity in the last window. Bombino may still be injured. I am a big fan of Chong-Qui, but doesn't seem to be rated highly enough to get a chance with this group yet. He is a very young 2007 player, still only 16.
Center-backs
Stuart Hawkins (Seattle Sounders), Neil Pierre (Philadelphia Union), Chibuike Ukaegbu (Sacramento Republic), Jose Magana Jr (LA Galaxy), Jackson Platts (Orlando City)Hawkins, Pierre and Ukaegbu all return from the last camp and Magana and Platts are added to form a big, in numbers and stature, center-back group. Hawkins is the only 2006 born player, the rest are 2007s. Pierre is one of the top rated prospects on this roster and is one of my
top 50 overall prospects.
It’s possible that Platts is here to play as a right-back as well. He has started to play more right-back than center-back for Orlando City. This position switch makes sense because of his size and athleticism. If he can transition smoothly, it will increase his potential as a pro.
Who isn't here?
LCB, Kaiden Moore (Atlanta United)
Moore is the only viable left-footed center-back that could get a look. Both Atlanta academy products could provide left-footed options on the backline but have not gotten the call yet.
Defensive/Center-mids
DM, Matthew Corcoran, (Birmingham Legion), DM, Colin Guske (Orlando City), CM, Diego Garcia (FC Dallas)
Once again the 6 and 8 group is very thin which says more about the player pool than the selection quality. Corcoran is finally back in the USYNT mix after a long injury. He hasn’t been in camp since the U-17 World Cup.
Guske returns from the last camp and Garcia is added to the group. Ervin Torres and Nate Worth were in the last camp, but not with this group in this camp. We will wait and see if they are in the U-20 team or omitted this time around.
Who isn't here?
CM, Nate Worth (Tampa Bay Rowdies), CM, Darius Lane (Brighton)
Worth was in the last camp and on the provisional roster for this camp. He might have been held back because he is preparing for USL playoffs with Tampa Bay, unsure.
Lane would provide some much needed physicality and athleticism in this midfield. I would like to see him get a chance with this group in the near future.
Attacking-mids/Wingers
AM, CJ Olney (Philadelphia Union), AM, David Vazquez (Philadelphia Union), AM, Cruz Medina (San Jose Earthquakes, AM, Santiago Morales (Inter Miami), AM, Jonny Shore (NYCFC), WING, Myhki Joyner (St. Louis City), WING, Zavier Gozo (Real Salt Lake), WING, Nimfasha Berchimas (Charlotte FC)
Five attacking-midfielders, even for Michael Nsien, is a bit excessive. It’s a relief to see Olney back in the mix. He is performing at the highest level of anyone in this group. Vazquez and Medina return from the last camp and were both part of the U-20 team that lost to Mexico in the World Cup Qualifying final.
Morales and Shore are both 2007s and join this group for the first time.
Joyner, Gozo and Berchimas all return as the wingers on this team. There are no new wingers on this group and nobody was removed.
Berchimas is the youngest player on this roster and the only player born in 2008. Berchimas is my
top rated overall prospect on this roster.
Who isn't here?
WING, Bryce Jamison (Orange County), WING, Gavin Turner (DC United)
Jamison is a big omission in my opinion, but it's possible he was held back due to USL playoffs. He started to play really well during the last month or two in the USL season and I think he could potentially make a positive impact on the U-20 team, let alone the U-19 team.
Turner is my top rated winger from the 2007 group and I think he deserves an opportunity as well.
Center-forwards
Aidan Dausch (Coventry), Caden Glover (St. Louis City)
None of the strikers from the last U-19 camp return to this camp which consisted of Keyrol Figueroa, Jykese Fields and Din Klapija. The last camp was in Europe which makes it easier to bring more European based players. This camp is in Florida so there are less, which may explain the Figueroa, Klapija and Fields omissions who are all based in Europe.
Dausch was on the U-20 roster last month and is now with the U-19s. We will see who takes his place on the U-20 roster. Glover is a 2007 and gets his first opportunity at the U-19 level.
Who isn't here?
Justin Ellis (Orlando City)
I thought Ellis showed really well in September for the U-18s and that might earn him a spot on the U-19s, but that hasn't happened yet.
Roster grade: B+
Now that the U-20 roster is out, we have the full context and with that I think Nsien has done a good job. I am happy to see Presthus get his first camp and I am excited to see Matthew Corcoran and CJ Olney back in the mix.
The roster construction is a bit odd, but that is primarily because of the strengths and weaknesses of the available pool. I would have liked to see two less attacking-midfielders and one more box to box midfielder and winger. Nate Worth and Darius Lane would have been good midfield options and Bryce Jamison would have been the ideal winger option. It's possible that Worth and Jamison were held back to prepare for USL playoffs.
